Conexus initiates Deep Learning Society

  • DLS

Deep Learning Society (DLS) is a network consisting of municipalities and schools from Nordic countries that want to share knowledge and experience on building more capacity for deeper learning among educational leaders, teachers and students. Viviane Robinson and Michael Fullan are among the thought leaders that will facilitate the workshops. Conexus provide the participating organizations with high-quality digital tools that are designed to stimulate deeper learning processes.

How will students experience deeper learning, with and without digital tools, if not educators also experience deeper learning, with and without digital tools, in their professional learning? This is a guiding question in DLS, where participating organizations together with world-leading researchers will explore and innovate specific approaches to design and facilitate deeper learning processes. This question also suggest that the principle of modeling is key for successful deeper learning. Educators need specific methods and tools to build capacity to model the kind of learning they want more of in their students.

Although most educators and students have their own definitions of deep learning, we define, with reference to Bellanca (2015), deeper learning as the type of learning that results from students’ self-directed application of critical and creative thinking, problem solving, communication and collaboration to deepen their understandings of key concepts in the curriculum. Deeper learning is also the outcome of those processes. This is in stark contrast to shallow learning, which can be conceived as learning efforts that start and end with memorization of facts or demonstration of basic skills in a curriculum. Deep learning revolves around understanding something so well that you are able to apply it in non-routine situations. Naturally, core skills in literacy and numeracy are vital as well.

We cannot sit around waiting for useful, evidence-informed methods and tools for deep learning to show up at our doorstep. In DLS we work together and test out different “how-to-approaches” to deeper learning. That is one way to co-create the evidence. Join us in this exciting and important work.
